After graduation from law school, Scott worked for the Michigan Migrant Legal Assistance Project for four years advocating for and representing migrant farm workers in judicial and administrative proceedings. Subsequently he worked for private law firms and served as in-house corporate counsel for several businesses, before starting his own private law practice in Genesee County in 1993. Scott moved to Kent County in 2019.
